Alfa Romeo - Appearance.

The Alfa 145 & 146 are an appealing unusually shaped Italian hatchback design, the 145 sporting 3 doors and the sister 146 opting for the five door version. Both an attractive car with distinct Italian Alfa style often compared as an inexpensive alternative to the Golf GTi.

Alfa Romeo - On the Road.

The 145 launched in 1994 followed by the 146 in 1995 were originally 1.6ie and 1.7 16v engines replaced by the Twin Spark 1.6 and 1.8 versions in 1997, a 2.0 Twin Spark was introduced in 1996. The 145 Cloverleaf model and the 146ti Twin Spark have a number of added extras which include alloy wheels, sports seats, electric mirrors, fog lights, headlamp washers, remote alarm and a six-speaker CD player. A 1.6 TS Junior available briefly from July 98 also gained alloys, body colour exterior trim and a rear spoiler on the other 146 version. The Twin Sparks give the 145 & 146 some get up and go, however older cars may lack in refinement, again with the earlier models steering can be found to have a poor response this was more composed in models after 1996. Both models are reasonably economic.

The interior in the 145 & 146 are light, airy and well designed. The back seat in the 145 has ample leg room however if extra was desired the 146 would probably be the way to go. The rear seats in the 146 are split folding and have been set lower than the 145 to increase headroom and exaggerate a notion of space. Both of these models incorporate plenty of luggage space and an excellent driving position. Power steering and electric front windows are standard on almost every model.

Alfa Romeo - Safety. & Security.

Security wise on most models of 145 & 146 you will find both an alarm and immobiliser along with central locking. No Euro NCAP crash test results were available however virtually all models do come with drivers air bag and from 1997 the ABS was up rated on these models.

Alfa Romeo - Reliability.

The 145 & 146 are noticeably less hassle than the earlier Alfas, however service history and regular oil change is essential in this.
