The Alfa 147 was voted car of the year in 2001 before it even went on sale, beating the likes of BMW and Audi's competition. The sleek Italian hatchback's style and competitive pricing display why.
Alfa Romeo - On the Road.
The engines fitted to the 147 model vary and all sound and drive well, however, the 2.0 petrol and the 1.9JTD diesel come out slightly above the rest. The 1.9 turbodiesel is an especially good second hand buy and very economic. The 3.2 V6 is awesome but maybe too powerful for the chassis and heavy on fuel so make sure you are committed before opting for this model. After 205 the 150Bhp diesel brings equally impressive performance as previous models but with a new six speed gearbox.
Alfa Romeo - Inside the 147.
The interior in the 147 is a bit of a let down, there is a claustrophobic feel and the rear seating is quite cramped for passengers. The luggage space is lacking and definitely falls behind in comparison to rival models such as A3, Focus and Astra. Another aspect of the 147 which could pose problems is the fact that the boot can only be accessed via a button on the key or on the dash, possibly awkward at times.
Alfa Romeo - Safety. & Security.
The 147 comes as standard across all cars as fitted with alarm and immobiliser and remote central locking. The Euro NCAP crash tests only rank the 147 with 3 stars however they are all fitted with ABS, traction control and six air bags as standard.

The 147 doesn't seem to have anything to report in relation to major reliability problems, a few small hick ups but the upkeep of maintenance for total peace of mind is recommended.
