Alfa Romeo - Appearance.
The Arna was launched in 1983 and was Alfa Romeo's attempt at international cooperation with Nissan. Basically the Arna was a Nissan Cherry shell with an Alfa touch.
Alfa Romeo - On the Road.
The Arna was actually badged the Nissan Cherry Europe and sold through Nissan dealers, available in 1186cc 63Bhp, 1350cc 71 or 86Bhp and 1490cc 95Bhp engines with a choice of either three or five doors. It was basically a Nissan Cherry with rear suspension and an Alfasud engine, driver train and front suspension; it was the rear suspension of Cherry which made it Alfa's first production of its kind. The body panels were produced in Japan and then shipped to the new production and assembly plant in Naples.
The Arna was a largely unsuccessful venture on Alfa's behalf and as a result of this production was stopped after just three years. Alfa fans were not impressed the Arna was known to be described as ‘a Nissan tin can with a sad Alfa engine under the bonnet'. However some Alfa fans have used the Arna as parts and spares to develop other Alfa's such as the Alfasud or Sprint. So at least all was not lost on this venture!
