It could be said that Citroen have given the C5 a drastic makeover. The front end now bears a striking resemblance to the one worn by the new C4, but there are also major upgrades in spec and the addition of a new, supremely economical diesel engine. And following Citroen’s long tradition of generous price cuts, the Citroen C5 presents itself as a very viable option.
However, whilst the Citroen C5 looks a strong prospect on the pricelist, it lacks the quality and performance of its rivals. Citroen have used risky tactics in the design of the C5, its new-age exterior appearance is unlikely to be to everyone’s taste. Fewer changes have been made to the interior, and the cheap plastics and obscure centre console are particularly uninspiring.
On a more positive note, the Citroen C5 makes for a comfortable enough ride; with plenty of space and a large boot. The car handles well, a result of its hydraulic suspension system, although unresponsive steering makes for a somewhat tiresome driving experience.
The new 1.6 HDI diesel version is pleasingly economical but this is only detrimental to the Citroen’s performance. 110 Brake Horse Power seems to little to shift the bulky C5 quite as might be desired, made even more annoying by the noisy cabin, especially on the motorway.
The Citroen C5 lies well behind it’s rivals in almost every department, the blow only softened by the potential discount you may be able to receive from your local dealer; otherwise, don’t bother.
