200 Jobs Could Go at Car Parts Plant

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Negotiations to save 200 jobs at a Swansea car part factory are due to begin.

Linamer bosses will meet with union leaders in order to sustain work at the plant.  The Union Unite claim its members were promised in 2008 that engine work would continue at the site.

The firm said the future of the plant is no longer viable.  Previously Linamars Chief Excutive Officer had said “We deeply regret the impact that this decision will have on our employees, thier families and the community.”

Unite representative Rob Williams said last Thursday “We are going back in to talk to them today and tomorrow.   We talked to our members in a mass meeting on Monday and hopefully the negotiations will be a bit more meaningful.”

The factory was formally own by Ford and Visteon before being aquired by the Canadian based Linamar Corporation.  The plant based on Fabian way since the 1960s used to employ nearly 1000 people.
