The availability of some prime components that are imported from Japan, such as microchips, has been quite low following the tsunami that hit the country earlier this year. The floods that have ruined vast areas in Thailand could further disrupt plans directed towards improving the output by Honda Motor Co. Ltd and other Japanese car makers.
“The demand for Jazz has taken us by surprise. The initial production target for Jazz was much less,” said a spokesperson at Honda Siel Cars India. “Dealers can’t take more bookings as they have lesser number of cars allocated to them and it becomes irritating for the customers to wait as long as six months for a car,” he further added.

Passenger car assembler Honda Cars Philippines Inc. shut down operations earlier this month while its commercial vehicle sister company Isuzu Philippines Corp. (IPC) is beginning to feel the impact of the parts supply crunch that assembly operations may slow down this month.
In an interview at the sidelines of the Auto Expo at the SMX on Friday, Joseph Bautista, sales division head of IPC, said since 90 percent of the company’s operations is assembly from completely knocked down (CKD) parts, the scarcity of components will put pressure on its operations.

In 2011-12, to Japanese carmaker will export engine parts for the City sedan and Jazz hatch to Indonesia, Malaysia, apart from kits comprising of Brio engine abe tranmission parts to Thailand. Parts exports in 2010-11 stood at Rs 11.3 crore.
“Quality and cost-competitiveness is high in India. The main idea was to get away from the exchange rate problem. Derisking (from concentrating production in Japan) is a spinoff benefit,” said Mr Jnaneswar Sen, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Honda Siel Cars India.
